This archival exhibition examines the broader history of athletics at San José State College (now San José State University), within the historical framework of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Featuring memorabilia, ephemera, photographs, and archival documents, Speed City: From Civil Rights to Black Power reveals the unique cross-section of sports and activism incubated at San José State College from the late 1940s through 1968. While the photograph of Tommie Smith and fellow San José State College runner John Carlos on the podium at the 1968 Olympics is explored in depth in With Drawn Arms: Glenn Kaino and Tommie Smith —on view at SJMA through April 5—this exhibition contextualizes their individual act of heroism within a broader climate of cultural and political activism. Presented in partnership at the San José Museum of Art with History San José, originally guest-curated by Urla Hill in 2007.
