Irving Norman: Fight for Life is a focused survey of the late Bay Area artist known for his monumental paintings and drawings critiquing the perils of modern life. Including several works from SJMA’s collection, the exhibition is guided by the remarkable story of this Bay Area local, whose life experiences as an activist and a Spanish Civil War soldier turned California artist fueled his belief in art as a catalyst for positive social and political change.

Featuring new works by multidisciplinary artist Kang Seung Lee and seldom-exhibited works by the late Bay Area artist and gardener Ed Aulerich-Sugai (1950–1994), Beta Space: Kang Seung Lee and Ed Aulerich-Sugai celebrates the communal work of remembrance. Featuring paintings, drawings, and mixed-media works alongside plants and personal objects, the exhibition offers an expanded model of archives as living, distributed networks.
