South East North West: New Works from the Collection highlights a dynamic array of paintings, sculptures, photographs, works on paper, and new media acquired by SJMA in the last five years. Reflecting the high-tech interests, lively cultural diversity, and innovative spirit of Silicon Valley, this exhibition features artworks by 30 artists from 11 countries, from internationally renowned figures to those working in California and the Bay Area as well as emerging practitioners. Together, these artworks demonstrate SJMA’s adventurousness and growing ambition to become a museum for the twenty-first century. Taking its title from the monumental, two-panel mixed-media work by Diana Al-Hadid in the exhibition, South East North West testifies to the expanding diversity, artistic creativity, and international scope of the collection through the work of over thirty artists from eleven countries.
Artists in the exhibit include Diana Al-Hadid, Robert Arneson, Firelei Báez, Rina Banerjee, Tony Berlant, Andrea Bowers, Alexander Calder, Victor Cartagena, Tiffany Chung, Jean Conner, Petra Cortright, Russell Crotty, Tacita Dean, Jay DeFeo, Tony Feher, Genevieve Gaignard, Chitra Ganesh, Kojo Griffin, Yojiro Imasaka Dinh Q.
