Hito Steyerl: Factory of the Sun

Hito Steyerl’s landmark video installation Factory of the Sun (2015) explores the unprecedented flow of data in our current digital landscape. Inspired by a quote from Donna Haraway’s Cyborg Manifesto (1985) describing machines as “made of pure sunlight,” Steyerl explains in the video: “Our machines are made of pure sunlight. Electromagnetic frequencies. Light pumping through fiberglass cables. The sun is our factory.” The premise of machines made of pure sunlight is not a romantic one for the artist who has long attuned herself to the power of image and their electronic reproduction to manipulate our worldview.

Upon entry into the immersive installation, one feels as though they’ve been transported into a lurid cyberspace glowing in a grid of blue LED lights. On screen, the distinctions between reality and fiction dissolve in a montage of YouTube dance videos, drone surveillance footage, video games, fictitious news, and real documentation of international student uprisings. Notions of time and space expand and collapse within this virtual world, reflecting our contemporary reality and the ceaseless transmission of images and information (and misinformation) around the globe.

Factory of the Sun tells a surreal story of workers whose forced dance moves in a motion capture studio are turned into artificial sunshine. The story is based on an actual YouTube phenomenon (her studio assistant’s brother whose viral homemade dance videos were used as a model for Japanese anime characters) and a news story about an experiment at CERN nuclear research facility that claimed to have measured a particle traveling faster than the speed of light. On screen, Steyerl interweaves fact and fiction; a montage of YouTube dance videos, drone surveillance footage, real documentation of recent international student uprisings combines with video game characters, fake news, and dancing, gold lamé-costumed avatars. In this imaginative reality spun from Haraway’s theory, the motion capture studio’s glowing grid of blue LED lights extends beyond the screen into the gallery, like a Star Trekian “holodeck” able to materialize a different world in three dimensions. Modern warfare, corporate culture, and anti-capitalist resistance movements are played out by disembodied characters—avatars, bots, or proxies for the human viewers who watch the video from the vantage of reclined beach chairs.

Factory of the Sun made its debut at the Venice Biennale in 2015 and is in SJMA’s permanent collection, co-acquired with the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles in 2017. This will be SJMA’s inaugural presentation of Factory of the Sun. Steyerl is a Berlin-based artist and writer, and one of the most critically acclaimed artists working in video today. Her work focuses on issues such as feminism, militarization, and the mass proliferation and dissemination of images and knowledge brought on by digital technologies.

The speed of light. A big question.

Can we match or even accelerate the speed of light? Someone managed already:

Exactly! At cern in Switzerland!

They accelerated a particle, sent it to Italy It was 0,001 times faster then before!

But actually when the set up was examined, ...

The guys over there realised that a fibre optic cable had gone rogue. Some small calculation error got thrown in,...

Fact is it didn’t work

But we’re gonna solve these questions! At Autobahn Equity!

Hello my name is Yulia

I am coding a game called factory of the sun

But you will not be able to play this game. It will play you.

This is your mission: You start off as a forced labourer in a motion capture studio. Every movement you make will be captured and converted into sunshine.

Four bots escaped from this scenario. They were shot by corporate drones during recent global uprisings.

In a statement released today, a spokesman for Deutsche Bank denied using drones to kill protesters.

There are several maps in this game. This is the first one.Let’s take a look at your firearm. This is a Sig Sauer. It was originally used by a solid snake in metal gear solid one.

First time I shot anything was in Japan. I was going to a Catholic all girls high school. And they had a gun club there. The Japanese girls were rather scary.

In order to aim simply press the right button and it will bring the gun directly up to your sights and you can align it in realism mode.

both of my parents were lieutenants in the Soviet Army,

Once you’re ready, aim at your target, place your finger on the trigger. My mom was particularly good with a sniper rifle.

Right as the Soviet Union was collapsing my mother decided that it was time to move to Israel. The aunt of my mother grew up in an orphanage in a Gulag where they were referred to as orphans of the enemy.

Her father was working at right next to the border of Mongolia. This was right around the time of the second World War and when this war finished the border shifted a few hundred kilometers to the north. He decided to take his family and move back into Russian territory. However, as they came to the border, they were stopped. They were told you are the enemy. And he was shot on the spot.

That is a very very good dying scene. Very nice.

OK so let’s be really specific here. It’s a drone, it’s a flying device that has a weapon mounted on it and it’s going to shoot you so you sort of don’t know what it is. You turn turn to look at it...

This is where the dancing thing starts to happen. This is in Edmonton, Canada. My brother started to do internet dancing in the basement of my parent’s house and got a lot of attention. And then he became a star.

The Japanese fans started picking up his moves and animating them as a multitude of different characters. So now there are a lot of them. There’s Forsythe, the classy guy who is the really popular one– everyone’s in love with him. The street fighter character is Guile. He’s the blond one, shirtless with pants. Um, he’s like really doing these strong punching movements. And then there is Odwaldo who is the weird one, the one doing all the strange dances.

Both my parents sold the Moscow apartment which is one of the most expensive apartments you can have. And my grandparents sold their entire house and everything that they owned. They took just their books and then when they arrived in Israel the only thing they could afford was a car. So we have this one photograph of three Russian men standing next to the thing that was the same value as everything they had owned in Russia which was a single car.

This emigration was actually very strange too. And there was just this train of buses full of Russian Jews or psuedo-‐Jews. I don’t have any recollection of this but the bus in front of us was bombed. And, uh, as a result we were taken into a military compound.

The Teufelsberg in Berlin. After the end of World War II, the allies piled up the rubble of Hitler’s Germania. It became the Teufelsberg hill. During the Cold War, the NSA built a listening station. It was from here that they intercepted all signals.

At this point in the game, everything flips. It turns out you are your own enemy and you have to make your way through a motion capture studio gulag. Everyone is working happily, the sun is shining all the time, it’s totally awful.

During the Cold War, the NSA built a listening station. It was from here that they intercepted all signals.

A person was killed today at Deutsche Bank: Sunshine Campus where scientists try to accelerate the speed of light to improve high frequency trading. A spokesman for Deutsche Bank is standing by live on site.

Great.

I’m gonna be the German twat, right?

Full-‐on Fritz, that’s what you want for sure. A Deutsche Bank baboon. Why me, actually?

For sure cause I am blond and blue-‐eyed! Maybe put on a Wolfenstein accent?

Wolfenstein 3D? Wolfenstein!

Deutsche Bank-‐ a continuation of the Third Reich!

Ok, we killed him. But not really. He was most probably a terrorist.

A terrorist hid behind him.

Not really, but terrorists might hide behind him There was a threat and we had to strike preemptively I tell you whatever I want,

this is an unlegislated area, free of liability, I open my mouth and close it again,

I speak, you listen to me,

This is democracy– this is how it works. I categorically deny that:

Deutsche Bank did not flatten Greece and Portugal This is a free country, a democracy,

I can tell you whatever I want.

My name is Naked Normal. I got killed in a protest in London against student fees. When I respond I could bend life in a Lobachevsky hyperbole. I can reverse light into itself. Slow it down until it becomes music. Light is deep entertainment and destruction. A matter of intense human pain

My name is Big Boss Hard Facts.I was crushed in the 2018 Singapore uprisings. We occupied the free port art storage and turned it into a render farm cooperative.

My name is high voltage. I got killed twice in Kobani fighting with Kurdish forces against IS.

My name is Liquid Easy. I was killed fighting Deutsche Bank High Frequency Trade bots. When I was 15 I trashed a Deutsche Band window.

But the debris was melted down and turned into optic fibre infrastructure.

We got killed in the future. We crowd your games and applications. We’re nonplayable characters. We cannot be played.

Stop. Brilliant. Next shot, we need music. And Michael, you will be dancing.

So this is map number three. The game changes here. It’s multi player, person versus person, player versus player. In this map it turns out that you can’t play any of the characters. I didn’t have enough time to program all of the environments. So actually the game is real.

My brother was part of a research group where they focused on the way in which light interacts with explosive material. You see this was for developing airport security. There was a lot of concern about homeland security at the time. You can do this with light because of the amount of photons that get absorbed by certain materials and the amount that are reflected.

This is about photonics and plasma. It’s sending out points, points of light. This is the same way that they detect planets.

Light is deep entertainment and destruction. A matter of intense human pain. I can reverse light into itself. Slow it down until it becomes music.
