IN MEMORY OF HUNG LIU, 1948–2021
Hung Liu, beloved artist and friend to SJMA, passed away on Saturday, August 7.
A pillar of the Bay Area arts community and an internationally renowned artist, Hung touched the lives of everyone she met through her warmth, grace, and generosity.
In 2015, Hung Liu (1948-2021) turned her attention to the Great Depression-era images by American Photographer Dorothea Lange. Liu recognized her own life in Lange's photographs of Dust Bowl migrants and created paintings like Valentine's Day (2019) to consider the photographer's well-known images with broader histories of migration, immigration, and displacement.
